The Asset

“Roger, hello from Jerusalem,” said the message from the secret Israeli agent. Dated August 12, 2016, it was addressed to Trump associate Roger Stone. “Any progress? He is going to be defeated unless we intervene. We have critical intell. The key is in your hands! Back in the US next week.” Later he promised, “October Surprise coming!”

The Israeli connection was by far the most secret (and perhaps overlooked) aspect of the Russiagate investigation. No details of it were ever revealed in the heavily redacted Mueller Report. “References to some sort of Israeli involvement in Trump’s 2016 campaign cropped up during Robert Mueller’s official investigation of the so-called Russia collusion affair,” noted Haaretz, “but were thoroughly redacted.” Nor was there any mention of an Israeli plot in the similarly redacted Senate Intelligence Committee Report, or in any of the indictments or trials. Nor did it ever leak into the press. What it involved, however, was an elaborate operation directed by Prime Minister Netanyahu to use secret intelligence, presumably concerning Hillary Clinton, to clandestinely intervene at the highest levels in the presidential election on behalf of Donald Trump.

While the American media and political system fixated on Putin and his armies of cyber warriors, trolls, and bots, what was largely missed in 2016 was that Israel had developed a great deal of experience in secretly manipulating elections around the world.
